Silicone Overmolding

The silicone molding process (also known as silicone casting) is a cost-effective solution for producing small batches of plastic parts. It supports a variety of materials, including ABS-like plastics, PP, PC, nylon, and soft rubber.

Key Advantages

Compared to traditional steel injection molds, this method significantly reduces tooling costs. The liquid material is injected into silicone molds under high or low pressure, resulting in parts with mechanical properties close to those of injection-molded components. A single silicone mold can typically withstand 15-20 production cycles, making it ideal for low-volume manufacturing.

Complex Geometries

Even parts with undercuts can be demolded smoothly due to the flexibility of silicone molds.

Low Mold Cost

Silicone molds are inexpensive and quick to fabricate (short lead time).

Application

This process is ideal for prototyping, small-batch production of new products, or replicating discontinued automotive components where original steel molds are unavailable.

Limitations

Not suitable for mass production: Silicone molds degrade after repeated use.
Higher per-unit cost: Part costs are higher than those produced with steel injection molds.
